History:

A hot cross bun is a sweet spiced bun made with raisins with a cross of white icing on top. Traditionally eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of Lent. The cross is the representation of Jesus Christ and the spice the spices used to embalm him.

The rhyme comes from street vendors calling for people to buy their pastries. Origins go all the way back to the 14th century.
